The Program

MFA in Animatronics

The only graduate program of its kind housed within a school of the arts — three years, small cohorts, and one rule that shapes everything else: technology serves the story, never the other way around.

Housed in UNCSA's School of Design and Production, the program runs three years, with cohorts kept deliberately small — two to eight students — so every student gets real hands-on time, not a lecture hall.

Students build broad fabrication literacy — wood, metal, plastics, mechanics, electronics, and programming — alongside the history and theory of puppetry and character performance. The goal isn't a technician who happens to work in entertainment. It's an artist who happens to build with motors.

In practice

Sylvie

In 2026, students in the program built Sylvie — the first fully animatronic character to appear in a UNCSA Spring Opera production, created for La Colombe. The making of Sylvie is documented in an upcoming article in Theatre Design & Technology.
